Supper: I had some ground beef thawed and wasn't too sure what I felt like doing with it. Not up for the usual spaghetti or chili or stroganoff. Sometimes I really need some inspiration for suppers... what do you make? Do you have a schedule? Pre-freeze meals? Argh, it gets so annoying trying to make a menu plan, etc. It has to be all that much harder with kids...

Laura and I used to do so well. We'd plan two or three weeks ahead, using our fresh stuff early on. Nowadays we do it one-week-at-a-time, and then "wing it" for a few more days until we get the motivation to grocery shop again. It doesn't help that we've had our kitchen in shambles for about two months. But tonight we used our Superstove for the first time (the gas was hooked up on Thursday). I was so excited! Penne pasta with shrimp, red bell peppers, basil, in a tomato cream sauce (green salad on the side).
Last year I was on a short Greek kick. I made a few recipes...very yummy but very time consuming. I had a similar phase with Thai...a lot of ingredients resulting in a lot of cleanup. I think now though, with more work space and a better organized kitchen, I might revisit Greek and Thai.
Karl and I have gone through phases of super-organized schedules mixing pre-homemade frozen meals (we would cook together all day and make a million meals to last all month) adding the pasta, rice, or fresh veggies... to kind of random instant noodle, pre-made pizza, or wings and fries nights. sigh. I think the key is the menu planning and grocery list planning. sigh again.

As for meal planning, I am not good at it all. I usually ask my friend Rachel what she is making and make that, or at least plan to make it the following day :)
Other than that, If I am really stumped I poll the family to see what they are interested in.

They say to menu plan and buy accordingly, but this never seems to work for us. Instead, I start out with good intentions and then I do a recipe search on-line, based on the ingredients on hand. We might have to pick up one or two things (today it was rice, which shouldn't be a problem at your house) but it prevents wasting food.
Ok, make fun of me all you want, but I still live at home so I don't really get much input into meals nor do I have to plan or create many of them. What's changing is that Katie (my girlfriend) and I are starting to have more meals together. Up until now we've been buying meals because it's faster and more convenient, but we want to start cooking together.
Do either of you have ideas for good quick recipies?
Rachel: mmm, feta. I love feta on pizza. We often pick up pre-made greek pizza from Sobeys with feta. Now I will need to try it with ground beef, thanks for the tip!
Stephen, if they don't make fun of you for living at home and eating mom's cooking, they will make fun of you for subscribing to Martha Stewart... so don't tell anyone if you decide to take this advice: our best friend for our first couple of years of marriage was the "Everyday Foods" (Martha Stewart) cookbook magazine subscription we had. I'm starting to think I should renew, but we had so many favourites in our 2 year collection that we weren't keeping up with new ones, so we ended our subscription. Anyway, they are all 30min prep with mostly basic pantry ingredients. Try it out, I bet it would be an easy way to start cooking with Katie, and 99% of the recipes we tried were fail-proof if you follow the directions closely.
