"severe storm"

Abbotsford Weather-1

Funny how weather definitions vary drastically across the world... or say, between two provinces. I was on the Columbia Bible College website, and came across a news update, saying that today's Christmas party had been postponed due to severe weather... Severe weather? I hadn't heard anything... so I click over to The Weather Network and check out Abbotsford weather... MINUS ONE WITH LIGHT SNOW?! seriously... help me out here folks. Granted, I did then find this article on CBC regarding the snowstorm... but it doesn't defend the cause much.

Severe weather? Try an average 5-day high of MINUS TWENTY FIVE and see how sympathetic I am. For my American friends out there, that is MINUS 13*F. At least we get Chinooks... I have a hope of getting warm again by next week... Winnipeg however: Deepfreeze season, see you in the springtime!

What you don't understand is we don't get snow. Our city does not have snow removal trucks in place or sand trucks in place until well into a snowstorm. Our streets our slick and we don't all have 4x4's with snow tires. It's best that everything shuts down cause it is not worth a car wreck over one day of snow. In a week the weather will warm up and it will be gone. We enjoy the snow as soon as we get it... check out my blog for pictures of the day :)

So funny! The first time I visit your blog you're laughing at us! I know it seems silly doesn't it. Have you seen the weather for Abbotsford today? It's -15!! Remind me not to move back to Winnipeg!

Winter boots - $75.00

Block heater for your car - $250.00

Chiropractor bill after shovelling snow for 6 hours - $125.00

Today's temperature in Ottawa: 12 degrees - Priceless

OUCH! yep, you got me there.

Actually, I nearly needed that chiropractor for my wipe-out on the sidewalk yesterday... not even one of those little "get up quick and look around to see if anyone saw" kind of falls... nope. This was a full-on-flat -out-snow-up-the-shirt-check-for-rips
-in-the-pants kind of wipe outs. argh.

I just came back to Saskatchewan from Ontario and had quite a shock: from +14 to -21 in one day... yikes.. But, yes, I'm proud to be Canadian if only to prove that I can stand the elements!

We have a friend that went to San Diego and said that they don't really talk about the weather there. Mostly because the weather just stays the same, all the time... what's there to talk about? It strikes me as funny that a post about the weather gets our blog's record amount of comments on it... because weather does everything BUT stay the same in Canada... and in Calgary alone. Take our forcast for instance... 25* difference than last week (0*C tomorrow). Anyway, how 'bout those clouds eh?

I am with you, Sheryl. Can you imagine experiencing +14 to -25 for the first time moving from one sub-tropical country to the frozen land of Canada in January? All my life up to that point had been spent in a city where people would drive up to the highest point in town before dawn to go "frost-watching" because it is a rare occurrence... Oh the good old days :)

came across this article today...

Vancouver (Reuters) - Chilled Vancouver commuters faced their second day of winter hell today, as an additional ¼ centimetre of the peculiar white stuff fell, bringing the Lower Mainland to its knees and causing millions of dollars worth of damage to the marijuana crops. Scientists suspect that the substance is some form of frozen water particles and experts from Saskatchewan are being flown in. With temperatures dipping to the almost but not quite near zero mark, Vancouverites were warned to double insulate their lattes before venturing out.

Vancouver police recommended that people stay inside except for emergencies, such as running out of espresso or biscotti to see them through Vancouver's most terrible storm to date. The local Canadian Tire reported that they had completely sold out of fur-lined sandals.

Drivers were cautioned to put their convertible tops up, and several have been shocked to learn that their SUVs actually have four wheel drive, although most have no idea how to use it.

Weary commuters faced soggy sushi, and the threat of frozen breast implants. Although Dr. John Blatherwick, of the Coastal Health Authority reassured everyone that most breast implants were perfectly safe to 25 below, down-filled bras are flying off the shelves at Mountain Equipment Co-op.

"The government has to do something," snarled an angry Trevor Warburton. "I didn't pay $540,000 for my one bedroom condo so I could sit around and be treated like someone from Toronto."

i think that if the poor west coast folk are having a hard time coping with their 'severe weather' they will definitely not want to talk to us hearty winnipegers for sympathy... you would not be able to handle the talk on the street here as we watch your severe weather news....

yes - we do leave our igloos long enough to laugh....
