Whew, this being a mom business keeps one busy eh?! Blog schmog, as you can see from the picture, it's all I can do to keep the barf off of me ;o) This one even splashed onto the floor (I was downstairs on the hardwood...)

August 29 was the due date given to us by the doctors... Here's my little man on the day he was "supposed" to be born, weighing in at 8lbs even (he was 5lbs 6oz when he was born, July 26) ...

One Month!

Caleb’s Mama and Yeye (Karl’s folks) brought over a lysee (red envelope), some red dyed eggs, roasted pig, and fruit today in celebration of Caleb’s official One Month birthday. Below is an explanation of this tradition, in which we, the parents, are to give out red eggs to friends and family. We will, in fact, be doing this in a couple of weeks when we host the One Month Celebration party at a local restaurant. There is quite an elaborate menu, much like a wedding celebration, that I will blog about next time!

"In Chinese culture, a baby's first month birthday calls for a celebration. Proud parents introduce their latest addition to friends and relatives by holding a red egg and ginger party. Traditionally, the baby's name is also announced at this time.

"Guests attending red egg and ginger parties bring gifts. Lysee or "lucky money" in red envelopes is often given to baby boys, while girls may receive expensive jewelry. The guests don't leave empty handed, either. The parents hand out red-dyed eggs, symbolizing happiness and the renewal of life. [Red eggs are chosen as gifts because they are the symbol of fertility, the changing process of life, and their round shape is the symbol of harmonious and happy life. They are made red because red color is a sign of happiness in Chinese culture (reference).]

"Red egg and ginger parties have their origins in ancient Chinese culture. As in other countries, infant mortality rates in China were quite high prior to the medical advances of the twentieth century. A baby who reached one month of age was likely to survive, and so the event was celebrated.

"In the past, due to the traditional importance of male children in Chinese culture, red egg and ginger parties were sometimes given for boys only, or the celebration for boys was more elaborate. Today, parties are given for babies of both sexes.

"In recent years, some of the traditions surrounding red egg and ginger parties have been modified. Parents may choose to hold the celebration at a fancy restaurant, complete with costumed Chinese performers or even a children's magician. Also, the baby may be anywhere from one to three months old by the time the party is held. But the custom of passing out red-dyed eggs continues. Parents may also use the brightly colored eggs to announce the birth; an even number of eggs are sent out for a boy, and an odd number to announce a baby girl." REFERENCE

thankful!

I am super thankful for my aunt and cousin for hosting an awesome shower for Caleb last week. Thank you for coming everyone, and thank you so much for your generosity! Photos here.

I am also so thankful for my generous and creative friends, Melissa D. and Diane E., for hosting the most amazing, creative and fun baby shower for Caleb today!

I've done quite the baby shower circuit, so I was pleasantly surprised when there were games I hadn't played or heard of... have you ever played the one with the little tiny (sterilized) plastic baby frozen into an ice cube? Everyone has them in their drinks, and the first one to see that their's has melted out has to yell, "my water broke!" and wins a prize (only, be sure to give the rule that you can't suck/crunch it out... this is basically "inducing labour" as one of the guests today put it, and should be considered cheating). Also, Melissa made an awesome crossword puzzle solely using trivia about Caleb from this blog (how on earth did you create that, Melissa?!).

It was all a "Jungle" theme because that is Caleb's nursery theme. I was the jungle mama and had a grass skirt and vine/leaf bra and pineapple drinking cup and everything. It was awesome. Check out the diaper jungle animals (complete with washcloth banana and sock ears/tails) and diaper jungle theme "cake" (both made by Melissa). I am thankful that the diapers won't fit Caleb for a while, so the creations can stay in the nursery for a while!

The mister muncher is getting ready to eat (again!) so I will post more details later... here's some pictures to speak a thousand words for me (click for larger image).

first "BCer" visitors...

Caleb's first visitors from BC (but not his first trip to Starbucks)! Here's Keri... (top) and Kori (bottom).

Caleb was pretty zonkered for most of the visit, but perked up and flashed his dimple near the end. I think Kori may have caught a picture of Keri with him with his eyes open, you'll have to check her blog to see if she posts it.

Keri and Kori are "fellow twins" that are great friends of my twin sister, Melissa. I have met them a few times while visiting Abbotsford, and mostly getting to know them better through our blogs. It was fun to have a chance to get together yesterday when they were in town for their cousin Brody's wedding (whom I know through Rocky; he was a student there while I was on staff).

They got him the cutest "cutesaurus" sleeper with little dinosaurs on it, and this (click for larger) "Night Owl" jammies from Old Navy:

My friends Melissa and Diane facilitated some meals for us through our church family; it's amazing how great it is to not have to think about meal planning on top of all the new routines (part of my month off was to pre-cook meals for us, but Caleb was too excited to get here!)... Anyway, this was included in the package from Melissa...

Karl's mom, bless her heart, made us some ginger egg soup to celebrate Caleb's arrival. This batch didn't have the traditional pig knuckles in it (they'll be in the next batch though, so don't worry!). It's actually quite good.

Pig knuckle soup is boiled for a long time with ingredients such as a lot of ginger, eggs, and pig knuckles in plenty of sweet black vinegar. It is a tradition to give out and share such soup to friends and relatives.

Here is another site that includes the recipe, for those of you eager to try it... or hey, next baby shower potluck, you could be Ms. Popular!

Karl's family is not heavily into ancient Chinese traditions, however they do prepare foods like this for the medicinal benefits.

"Ginger Pig Knuckle Soup contains all the ingredients believed to benefit [women after giving birth]. It is because the soup contains sweet vinegar, which helps dissolves the calcium from the pig bones, to assist the mother in absorbing the calcium when consumed. The black vinegar aids in circulation, speeds up the cell regeneration process, assist in increasing bile in the spleen and helps dissolves the fats in the pig knuckle. Sweet vinegar is believed to contain certain chemicals to reduce risk of cancer and heart disease.

"The eggs contain protein, which aids in cell production. Last but not least, ginger aids in digestion, and helps balance the mother's mental and emotional state. Ginger also contains vitamin C which helps increase immunity. Ginger also creates "heat" in the mother's body to warm her up when she feels cold and weak after giving birth."

Oriental Cucumber Side Salad

This is another one of those recipes that is too simple and delicious to not share:

Ingredients:

• One english cucumber
• One table spoon of soy sauce
• Coarse salt
• Toasted sesame seed oil (to taste)
  
• One stalk of green onion

Directions:

1. Cut the ends off the cucumber, then cut it in half lengthwise
2. Slice cucumber at an angle (approximately 1/8" to 1/4" thick)
3. Sprinkle cucumber slices with coarse salt and toss to coat
4. Let stand for 15 to 30 minutes in the refrigerator, then drain any liquid formed after
   
5. Chop the green onion, and add to the cucumber
6. Add soy sauce and sesame seed oil
7. Toss, drain excess soy sauce, and serve

Ladies and Gentleman: we have... A BELLY BUTTON! Caleb's umbilical cord fell off two days ago (day 11).
In other news, Caleb often seems to wiggle one or both arms free from his swaddle and likes to sleep with his arms straight above his head. My mom says I used to do this as well.We had a doctor's appointment yesterday, and things are going well. Caleb is back to his birth weight, and is now 5lbs 6.5oz (up from 4 lbs 13.5oz). He's eating well except for the odd spit up here and there; this morning it was a full out barf of most of his bottle... spraying out his nostrils and mouth, all over mommy, down my shirt and everything. This instigated his first bath at home (I had to wait until his umbilical cord fell off). 4 receiving blankets, 3 wash clothes, 1 bath towel, 1 spray from Mr. Jr. Fire Chief and 1 screaming baby later he was all sparkling clean! No pictures... kinda had my hands full and didn't really think about it until later. It was rather uninspiring anyway! Maybe next time.

Off to do laundry!

adventures

We had a bit of an adventurous day yesterday. Before we got discharged on Tuesday night, they decided to give Caleb one more tanning session (phototherapy for jaundice), then we were to take him to the lab in the morning for blood tests. Long story short, the public health nurse also visits on your first day home. Between the results from the blood test, and Caleb's temperature being a bit cool, she sent us to the Children's Hospital for follow up.

At the hospital, after some deliberation and tracking of records, and evaluation, etc, they decided to send us overnight to the Peter Lougheed Centre (PLC) for more phototherapy. Then changed their minds (actually the PLC disagreed with the Children's Hospital and said Caleb's level was not at a critical enough level to treat him). Talk about a roller coaster! So home we went; the compromise was that we were to take him again this morning for tests at the lab and see if he was improving.

The "ironic" part of all of this? There was a reporting error on his levels from yesterday (they accidentally gave us the results from a few days ago at the hospital) and he had actually drastically improved yesterday (and even more so today). We've been receiving such excellent care, and are thankful for the services we have available to us... but that was really frustrating!

Caleb is doing well and settling in to his new home :) Lots of excitement, and yet another car ride tomorrow for a doctor's appointment, poor little guy. Here are some more pics (click to go to album site for larger pics, or see slideshow below).

There is no place like home

Caleb has been doing exceptionally well, so the doctors sent him home yesterday (Tuesday). He spent the first night in his new home and everyone is doing well. Be sure to check back here from time to time for more updates.

I confess! I'm smitten. I can't wait to show you Caleb's little dimple on his right cheek, if I could just catch it on camera. Well, I guess he is only three days old; there's time yet ;o) He has already changed since this photo was taken (his eyes are less 'puffy'). He checks everything out now, and while I am feeding him, he tracks Karl's face with eyes. Pretty miraculous!

Caleb is doing very well; we are on our way back to the hospital for an evening feeding. Wanted to show off some more pictures... wish we could call each of you with updates! We will be in touch soon...

It's a boy!!!

It's a boy!!!

I guess that's not exactly a surprise. The surprise was when Dayna woke me up at 5:30am Thursday morning and told me, "I think we need to go to the hospital." My first thought (Dayna doesn't even know this yet) was "are you sure, he is five weeks early." Fortunately, I have learned from my first and only prenatal class that the first cardinal rule for deciding when to go to the hospital is whenever she wants to go. We arrived at the hospital at 7:00am. To make a long story very short, Dayna gave birth to Caleb Sing-Kwong Chu on July 26^th, 2007 at 8:55pm. He weighted in at 2,449 grams (5 lb 6 oz) and was 46cm (18 inches) long.

Despite being five weeks early, Caleb has been breathing on his own since birth. He was put under a temperature regulator but did need it anymore in a few hours. He is still getting half his nutrition through an I.V., but he is doing real good feeding as well. When he is able to feed normally, he will be taken of the I.V. and he will likely go home shortly after that. Dayna is also healing quite fast and well. We expect Dayna to be able to come home tomorrow (Saturday).

Caleb, a biblical name, has the meaning of faithful and bold. We want him to have the same faithfulness and courage as Caleb in the bible. Sing-Kwong (承光) means "to bear light" or "bearer of light". We want him to be a light of the world (Matthew 5:14-16).

I can hardly believe that it's been nearly a month since I blogged last. Karl has broken a record... two consecutive posts before I got back to it! I'm not even sure where to start; it's been a jam packed month, but full of all those "that's-what-summer-is-for" happenings. I bet pictures is the best place to start:

Forsyth's June visit: Zoo Trip

Forsyth's June visit: the guys took the kids to Science World so that my mom and Melissa and I could go do a birthday/girls' day. We had an awesome lunch at the Brava Bistro, and Melissa and I each got some cute 'birthday money' outfits. Mom was the fashion consultant ... and financier :)
My 31st birthday was on 07/07/07... crazy eh? Maybe I am extra lucky now? Too late; I already feel like the "luckiest" gal around :) great friends, great family, great husband, great baby on the way... and how about that Skor bar blizzard DQ ice cream cake?! YUM.I am done my CCUFairs position and spent last week hiring my replacement (she's fabulous); Karl assembled an armoire in our living room so that we can have a more accessible computer; my office is in the basement, and I was in the habit of using the laptop in the kitchen... but the laptop is not mine, and went to its new home with Julie :(

Next on the furniture assembly priority list: our new crib and baby-change-table-dresser! Maybe when the weather cools off a bit (they're upstairs and boy has it been toasty warm in these here parts!).
And last but not least in my summary of what feels like the busiest month ever (I didn't even get started on my uncle's wedding, and can you believe I missed pictures of the chocolate fondue and finger nail painting with my cousins (13 and 17 years old)?...

It won't be as long of a break until next blog... I am working a couple of weeks full time at my church, then I am officially off on maternity leave. If baby waits long enough, I will have nearly a month off before he comes. All is going well with Baby Chu by the way! Six more weeks (sigh!). We had our first prenatal class on Thursday and that was already good for some laughs.

My Mom and Trent head off to Vegas in a couple of weeks; I am not jealous of the heat they will have there, but I am definitely jealous of their tickets to the Blue Man Group and Cirque du Soleil's "O".

I think I hear some left-over DQ ice cream cake calling my name... :)

Malt Beverage

Dayna and I went to the Calgary Co-op to pick up some grocery this afternoon. I saw this "Malta" drink and decided to give it a try... and now I can claim that I have given it a try...

It tastes like watered-down carbonated molasses with a slightly bitter Milo aftertaste. It is not that bad, but I had it with my supper. So in contrast with the mandarin chicken salad, the bitterness was very pronounced.

It is now about ten minutes after supper and I am just finishing the last bit of it. It is a bit more enjoyable but I probably won't have it again. Nevertheless, it was definitely a worthwhile adventure for the day.

Weekly Awards

I call them weekly awards... a friend/colleague/fellow blogger of mine calls this kind of post "the junk drawer": kind of odds and ends piling together in a single post. We've had a busy week and have a couple more busy ones coming, so I suspect you may have a series coming.

Comic of the Week:
Holiday of the Week: Father's Day. It wasn't as bad as I anticipated, being the first one after my dad died. It was great to focus on Karl's new role as dad, and we had friends in town with a three year old girl, so that was cute too. Us gals made the guys waffles for breakfast before church, and I got Karl a dad-sized shirt that says "V 1.0" on it and a baby sized shirt that says "V 2.0" ... computer guy humour. No pics until Baby Chu gets to be the model! That night we went for a barbecue at my Step-Dad (of nearly 15 years) and Mom's house, so it was great to celebrate with them too, because Trent means a lot to me.

Visitors of the Week: Our good friends the Schafers; Rich was the best man at our wedding and Melanie was one of my bridesmaids. Sophie was just barely "along for the ride" at that time in mommy's tummy!Martha Stewart of the Week: Jane Kruger! I went for a visit to pick up some of her amazing Stampin' Up! cards, and she had this gorgeous Dahlia in one of her pots:

Baby Chu Update of the Week! I am officially at the 10 week countdown... Baby Chu is kicking up a storm and already waking me up for early morning feedings... usually at 4:30am. Funny enough, the shirt is not even maternity... I am pretty lucky with the acceptable style right now! Baby-doll shirts and LONG t-shirts. Perfect!

Update...

We went for a little drive today to see if we could find the house that was hit by lightning... the news photo looked like the area right across from our house. We didn't have to drive far! It turns out it is just around the bend from our house, but at an angle that we couldn't see from our windows so we missed all the action last night. I'm pretty glad we didn't get too much action! Here's a photo I took earlier tonight...

We had some crazy thunder, lightning and flooding in Calgary last night. I took some videos, but they don't really do it justice. At lunch today I told my friend Stacey that we didn't have the usual volume from the frogs in the pond across the street from us and she said, "you know it's bad when the frogs are drowning!"

Here are some other photos... one of a house that got struck by lightning in my neighbourhood (Tuscany) just across the way from us... I could smell smoke and Karl was checking our basement to see if something had shorted out down there... but it wasn't us!

I can see how the first car got into the depths, conceivable not knowing just how deep the water was... It does kind of make me wonder why the others followed...

Anyway, the forecast is for sun tomorrow! Hopefully sunny for Karl's 35th birthday on Saturday :) Banff here we come!

Ah, nothing like the downpour of a thunderstorm after a few hot days (I know you BC folks may beg to differ, but we like it). Karl finished mowing the lawn merely minutes before it started raining... perfect timing.

Yesterday I did a bit of garage sale-ing and got a new jogging stroller. Not that I'm a jogger... but it will be good for walks on the paths around our place. I am also looking at what to get by way of our 'real stroller' ... from online reviews it looks like looking for light but sturdy is the way to go... plus parent cupholders and lots of parcel storage? It seems like some of these reviewers are asking a lot though... The dilemma for me is whether to go with a double/tandem right away, or wait until we actually have 2 kids...

Here's our $40 steal (the closest rendition I could find, too lazy to take a pic myself!) the best part being that the seat adjusts so that the baby can face you too):
At the same garage sale, I picked up an infant bathing tub with a fabric-holder-insert thing, a pile of receiving blankets and hooded towels, and a couple of books. Where on earth are we going to put everything? By the time Baby Chu arrives, his room will be overflowing!

Making supper now, maybe more later :)
